May 2025 Michigan Casino Report

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has unveiled the latest figures from the state’s three leading casino properties for the month of May 2025: MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown. Collectively, these venues pulled in approximately $114 million in gaming revenue—a modest uptick of 0.7% compared to the same period last year.

Leading the pack was MGM Grand Detroit, which chalked up nearly $53.2 million. That’s a notable 2.4% increase year-over-year, reaffirming its position as the top earner among Michigan’s gaming hubs. MotorCity and Hollywood Casino followed, with revenues around $34.5 million and $26.2 million, respectively. Both saw a slight 0.6% rise from last year but experienced a tiny 0.2% dip when comparing month-over-month figures.

Looking at the broader picture, revenue from table games and slots hit about $112.7 million, marking a 1.2% increase over last year and climbing 3% from the previous month. However, for the period from January through May 2025, combined revenue from these gaming options dipped slightly—down 0.2% compared to the same span in 2024.

Tax contributions from these casinos totaled roughly $9.1 million—just a $100,000 increase from last year. Meanwhile, Detroit benefited from $13.4 million in wagering taxes and development payments in May, supporting local initiatives and infrastructure.

On a regulatory note, the MGCB took action on June 2, sending cease-and-desist notices to six online gaming operators after discovering they were offering internet-based gambling without proper state approval—an important reminder of Michigan’s strict licensing standards.

Turning to sports betting, the story was a different tune. Retail sports wagering gross revenue plunged by 31.1% year-over-year, totaling just $1.3 million. Despite that, the state’s sports betting handle for May hit $9.2 million. Interestingly, even with the decline in gross revenue, retail sports betting experienced a boost from April—an increase of nearly $965,000—highlighting some resilience in the market.
