NBA Star Malik Beasley Under Federal Investigation Over Betting Allegations

Basketball star Malik Beasley is currently under federal scrutiny amid ongoing investigations into potential links to NBA game betting. Authorities are probing alleged anomalies during the 2023-24 season, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York taking the lead. The inquiry also targets betting behaviors observed while Beasley was with the Milwaukee Bucks last season. NBA Malik Beasley betting investigation

Beasley’s legal representative, Steve Haney, confirmed that discussions are ongoing with federal prosecutors. Haney stated, “Malik Beasley has not been charged with anything,” emphasizing that his client is entitled to the presumption of innocence throughout the process.

NBA spokesperson Mike Bass affirmed that the league is fully cooperating with federal authorities. Meanwhile, the Detroit Pistons declined to comment, redirecting inquiries to the league. Negotiations between Beasley and the Pistons have hit a temporary pause; they had been in discussions for a three-year, $42 million contract, but those talks are now on hold as the investigation unfolds.

Beasley’s background includes previous legal issues; notably, in 2020, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of making violent threats. This led to a 12-game suspension from the NBA and a subsequent prison sentence after the 2020-21 season.

The NBA is increasingly concerned about the expanding influence of sports betting, especially with the rise of online gambling, which threatens the integrity of competitions. As a result, the league has intensified efforts to safeguard its credibility.

Recently, the NBA addressed the rapid growth of sports betting through a formal letter to Caroline D. Pham, acting chairwoman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The league expressed worries about the potential risks to game integrity. They pointed out that sports prediction markets often operate on a self-certified basis, lacking the regulatory oversight that traditional betting enjoys through state approval.

The sector has experienced swift expansion—from betting on entire seasons to targeted markets like individual matches or player performances. The NBA highlighted the absence of mandatory reporting for suspicious activities, which hampers investigation efforts and risk management. The league emphasized, “this gap in regulation makes it difficult to monitor risks as these markets gain popularity.”

The NBA called on the CFTC to establish stronger regulatory frameworks to enhance transparency and security, aiming to protect the integrity of professional basketball amid the booming sports betting industry. NBA Malik Beasley betting investigation
