More than half of the 20 teams in Brazil’s top football division, Serie A , have expressed their concern through this document, which highlights potential financial repercussions and broader impacts on the Brazilian football ecosystem. The manifesto was disseminated through the official channels of 11 clubs, ahead of the scheduled Senate vote on the bill this Wednesday (28).

The legislation in question, Bill 2,985/2023, was authored by Senator Styvenson Valentim and has Senator Carlos Portinho acting as rapporteur. It seeks to impose tighter controls on the marketing strategies employed by sportsbooks, including banning direct advertising such as sponsorships on team uniforms. Moreover, it proposes restrictions on the use of athletes and public figures in promotional campaigns, as well as setting specific timeframes for advertising broadcasts and mandating warnings about betting risks. Currently, every team in the first division benefits from sportsbook sponsorships, whether as main sponsors or otherwise, making the potential restrictions a significant concern for the clubs.

In response to the bill, a collective movement emerged among several clubs, culminating in the “Joint Declaration of Brazilian Football Clubs.” This document calls on Senate committees to approach the legislation with caution and responsibility, warning of the possible harm it could inflict on Brazilian football and its cultural importance. As a result, independent anti-corruption hearing officer Richard Young issued a lifetime ban along with a $15,000 (£11,386/€13,184) fine, which took effect on January 21, 2025. Young emphasized the gravity of Rodriguez’s actions, stating, “As a chair umpire, he was in an important position of trust charged with upholding the integrity of the sport. This was not a one-off occurrence of bad judgment.”

Antonio Sosa contested charges linked to two matches in the Dominican Republic in 2021. However, after a hearing, Young upheld the charges, resulting in a five-year suspension and a fine of $3,000. Importantly, Sosa’s suspension was backdated to October 2022, meaning he will be eligible to officiate again in October 2027.

Wellingthon Lopez also denied charges associated with two matches in the Dominican Republic during 2019 and 2020. After a hearing in February, Young upheld the charges against him, imposing a four-and-a-half-year suspension and a $1,000 fine. These recent sanctions are part of a broader effort by the ITIA to address corruption in the sport. Earlier this month, the agency also announced severe penalties against five players connected to a match-fixing syndicate in Belgium. Yannick Thivant, Thomas Brechemier, Gabriel Petit, Thomas Setodji, and Hugo Daubias have all received bans or suspensions due to corruption offenses committed between 2017 and 2018, which are linked to the high-profile match-fixing syndicate led by Grigor Sargsyan.

Among these tricks are the ollie-to-Indy, the gymnast plant, the frontside 540-rodeo flip, and the Saran wrap. 

In one of skateboarding’s defining moments, Hawk executed a 900 twist (2 1/2 turns) at the 1999 X Games, a feat that had never been performed before. In 2003, Tony officially retired from competitive skating.

Away from the deck, Hawk continued to grow the sport with a variety of successful partnerships and branding deals. In 1992, Tony founded Birdhouse Skateboards (originally Birdhouse Projects) with ex-Powell Peralta professional skateboarder Per Welinder. In 1998, Hawk and his family created Hawk Clothing, a line of children’s skate apparel, and in 1999, he founded the media company 900 Films.
