A packed Amaan Stadium bore witness to African youth football history being made in Zanzibar when Tanzania were crowned champions in front of their home supporters after defeating Guinea in the boys’ division of the competition, while South Africa also ascended to the summit of African youth football as champions in the girls division following a 1-1(5-4) win over Morocco.

The final of the four-day tournament, which took place between 21 and 24 May on the Tanzanian island, was attended by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, who earlier in the day visited the Zanzibar State House to meet H.E. Dr Hussein Mwinyi.

Ahead of the two finals, a strong contest for a bronze medal took place in the afternoon. Uganda showed resilience in defeating hosts Tanzania in the girls’ third-place play-off.

In the boys’ bronze medal contest, Senegal and Benin played out to an evenly balanced draw, which had to be decided on penalties, as Senegal emerged victorious.

The CAF African Schools Football Championship concluded yet another impactful season of celebrating and developing African youth football across all spheres of the game.

Mukabana Yvonne Namai, African Schools Programme Manager at Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) took to her socials to release the tremendous results. She wrote; “The 2023-2024 season registered a 40% increase in the number of boys and girls that participated at national phase level across 44 countries in Africa. A huge congratulations to South Africa [girls] and Tanzania [boys] for winning the bragging rights as Champions of U15 Schools in Africa.”

“The African Schools Programme ancillary programmes registered a significant increase in participation across the Young Referees Programme, Young Reporters Programme, Safeguarding Programme, Medical Officers Programme and Coaches Programme. Our African Legends took lead in the Leadership Programmes that were conducted during the Zonal Qualifiers and in the Continental Final.” She added.

The African Club Association seeks to unite stakeholders from every part of the continent’s football setting to promote excellence, creativity, and teamwork in club football.

October 5, 2023, featured the first encounter between African Clubs and President Motsepe. The African Club Chairmen were briefed by Motsepe on the establishment of the African Club Association, which aims to protect and advance the interests of the African Football Club.

We want every single club in Africa to have the capacity to sustain itself and it’s easier said than done. You lose significant money from participating in the Confederation Cup and Champions League and you cannot develop African football without making sure that the football clubs are self-sustaining and commercially viable. The playing fields are not level, this is not just what happens throughout the world, but it is also what happens in Africa.

ACA will guarantee the commercial viability, worldwide competitiveness, and profitability of African football clubs in addition to the respect, credibility, independence, and excellence of referees, match commissioners, and VAR operators.

In addition, ACA will be responsible for forming alliances with sponsors, the business community, and governmental bodies to construct football-related infrastructure and facilities, including stadiums, in each of the 54 Caf Member Associations. These buildings must adhere to CAF and FIFA regulations.

Hersi Said, the president of Young Africans, was selected to chair the ACA. Said’s deputy will be Paul Bassey of Akwa United in Nigeria and Jessica Motaung of Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa.

Two representatives from each of CAF’s six zones make up the board. Although a CEO has not yet been selected, it is anticipated that the ACA will be headquartered in Kenya.

According to Motaung, to increase money, the clubs must concentrate on marketing and commercializing the game. She dismissed the notion that the organization might eventually clash with CAF by saying, “It’s about finding the rights interests for the game. CAF Africa Club Association

Motsepe emphasized once more his desire to include business in supporting the clubs. The absence of sponsors for the most recent African Football League, a scaled-down version of the originally intended African Super League, however, suggested that the commercial sector could be hesitant to support more CAF competitions as well as the clubs.
