The case centers around accusations that Henrique deliberately received a yellow card during the match against Santos on November 1, 2023, actions allegedly taken to influence sports betting outcomes.

In a recent development, Flamengo requested that the Court consider the statute of limitations in the potential match-fixing case against Henrique. The 1st Disciplinary Commission of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) responded by majority vote, deciding to reject the request. The commission upheld the validity of the complaint filed by the Court’s Prosecutor’s Office.

On August 1, 2025, the STJD Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Bruno Henrique along with four other individuals for involvement in match-fixing connected to sports betting. Should Henrique be convicted, he could face penalties including up to two years of suspension, a 24-match ban, and fines reaching BR200,000.

Adding a broader dimension to the case, a third-division football club from Campana, Argentina, was officially accused of attempting to manipulate a match on August 6, 2025.

The other accused individuals include amateur athletes Wander Nunes Pinto Júnior, Claudinei Vitor Mosquete Bassan, Andryl Sales Nascimento dos Reis, and Douglas Ribeiro Pina Barcelos.

Before ruling on the case’s substantive issues, the 1st Disciplinary Commission evaluated preliminary procedural matters, including the applicability of the statute of limitations. The panel’s decision was to reject the preliminary motion by a vote of 4-1.

Following a disciplinary hearing held on September 4, 2025, Henrique was sanctioned with a 12-match suspension and a BR$60,000 fine by the STJD. The decision was based on Articles 243 and 243-A of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, which address fraudulent conduct aimed at influencing match results.

Among these, a conversation reveals that Bruno Henrique’s brother, Wander Nunes Pinto Júnior, asked when the player would receive his third yellow card, to which Bruno Henrique responded, “Against Santos.” This exchange has raised suspicions of manipulation under Article 200 of the General Sports Law, which addresses the manipulation of sports results, carrying a potential sentence of two to six years, as well as allegations of fraud, which can result in a prison sentence of one to five years.

The investigation also identifies additional individuals involved in the alleged scheme. These include Wander Nunes Pinto Júnior, Bruno Henrique’s brother; Ludymilla Araújo Lima, who is married to Wander; and Poliana Ester Nunes Cardoso, Bruno Henrique’s cousin—all of whom are suspected of being connected to betting activities. Furthermore, a second group of bettors, comprising Claudinei Vitor Mosquete Bassan, Rafaela Cristina Elias Bassan, Henrique Mosquete do Nascimento, Andryl Sales Nascimento dos Reis, Max Evangelista Amorim, and Douglas Ribeiro Pina Barcelos, is linked to Wander and suspected of participating in the betting scheme. The Federal Police’s indictment issued in April may lead to formal charges in the Common Court, pending the decision of the Public Ministry of the Federal District.

Bruno Henrique’s legal team has responded to the allegations by filing a request on May 20 at the 7th Criminal Court of the Federal District, seeking to dismiss the investigation. They argue that the player’s actions do not constitute fraud or result in match manipulation. The Ministry of Treasury has noted this irregularity and announced the initiation of an inspection process. In response, Pixbet claimed there was an “operational error at the international market provider” and that they took the Pope betting market offline promptly after being notified by the Estadão news website. Flamengo, however, has opted not to comment on the matter.

Within FlaBet’s system, Italian cardinal Pietro Parolin was designated as the favorite to assume the papacy, with the house promising to pay triple the amount wagered for those betting on Parolin correctly. If bettors selected the Hungarian cardinal Péter Erdő, they would receive nine times their wager. For names deemed less likely, returns could reach as much as 35 times the amount bet.

The Treasury Ministry’s Prize and Betting Secretariat (SPA-MF) reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the law, stating that “the company will be notified to remove from its website all bets that are not authorized by law, since only bets on sporting events and online games are authorized within the scope of fixed-odds bets.”

Possible penalties stated in article 41 could include a warning, a fine of up to R$2 billion, or even the revocation of the betting license. Pixbet clarified that the initial offering was due to an operational error by the international market provider, which, while certified and authorized for Brazilian sports events and online games, mistakenly exposed these special markets that are restricted by national legislation. Following awareness of the improper exposure regarding the non-sporting event (specifically bets on the next pope), Pixbet quickly implemented necessary steps to eliminate the market from their platform.

Pixbet concluded its statement by emphasizing that the irregular exposure of the aforementioned markets was undue and unintentional, stating that it does not reflect the company’s compliance policy, which actively seeks to adhere to all current regulatory frameworks.

Pixbet Soluções Tecnológicas, based in Paraíba, operates FlaBet and serves as Flamengo’s primary sponsor. The company has a contract worth R$470 million, effective until 2027, which includes having its name featured on the club’s jersey.
