DraftKings to Ban Credit Card Payments for Online Betting
DraftKings has announced that it will cease accepting credit card deposits for its online sportsbook and casino services starting today, August 25th. This decision follows a $450,000 fine issued by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) in July 2025 for previous violations. The MGC fined DraftKings for unintentionally allowing users to deposit funds and gamble using credit cards during 2023 and 2024.
The company confirmed the change to Gaming America on August 21, stating that it is a strategic decision aimed at improving the deposit process and helping customers avoid cash advance fees and higher interest rates associated with credit card use. Customers will still be able to fund their accounts via debit cards, bank transfers (ACH), wire transfers, and payment platforms such as PayPal, Venmo, or Apple Pay, where applicable.
DraftKings reported its Massachusetts violations on three separate occasions, totaling over $83,000 in credit card deposits. The MGC required the company to return the funds to 218 users and conducted a third-party audit to ensure no additional unauthorized deposits or wagers occurred using credit cards.

The Missouri Gaming Commission awarded DraftKings a sports betting license on August 15, allowing the operator to offer wagering services in the state independently of casinos or professional sports teams.
A company representative explained that the law was misinterpreted; they believed it only applied to deposits made while physically present in Massachusetts. Currently, several states, including Iowa, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Vermont, have laws prohibiting credit card deposits for gambling, and DraftKings has also restricted credit card use in Tennessee.
