Ontario iGaming Records 1.41 Million Active Player Accounts as Revenue Jumps 26%.

Ontario’s regulated online gambling market recorded strong growth in September 2026, supported by an increase in active player accounts and higher operator earnings.

According to the latest figures released by iGaming Ontario (iGO), total wagers reached C$9.71 billion during the month. This represented a 13.6% increase compared with the C$8.55 billion recorded in September 2025.

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) also increased significantly. Licensed operators generated C$416.3 million, up 26.2% from C$329.8 million a year earlier.

September’s revenue was the highest monthly total since December 2025, when operators recorded C$425.6 million.

Ontario Active Player Accounts Reach New Record

The province recorded approximately 1.41 million active player accounts in September. This marked an all-time high for Ontario’s regulated iGaming market.

The figure represented a 20.1% increase compared with September 2025. It was also 16.8% higher than the previous month.

Despite the growth in player activity, average revenue per active account declined to C$295. This was the lowest monthly figure since February 2026.

However, the average remained 5.4% higher than the same period last year.

The increase in player accounts coincided with the arrival of major US gambling brands in Ontario.

Fanatics Casino entered the market on September 1, 2026. This followed Hard Rock Bet’s Canadian debut in Ontario on July 22.

Online Casino Maintains Market Dominance

Online casino games continued to generate the largest share of Ontario’s regulated gambling market.

The segment recorded C$8.50 billion in wagers, accounting for approximately 88% of total betting activity.

It also generated C$340.8 million in revenue, representing 82% of the market’s total GGR. This was a 22.7% increase compared with September 2025.

However, sports betting also recorded notable growth during the month.

Ontario Sports Betting Revenue Jumps 47%

Licensed sportsbooks recorded C$1.07 billion in wagers during September. This represented a 27% increase from the C$843 million reported in August.

Sports betting revenue also rose by 27% month-on-month, reaching C$69.1 million compared with C$54.4 million in August.

Year-on-year revenue growth was even stronger, increasing by 47.3% compared with September 2025.

However, wagering handle increased by only 1.2% over the same period.

Sports betting accounted for 11% of total wagering activity and 17% of operator revenue in Ontario.

The increase coincided with the start of the new football season and growing interest in NHL betting ahead of the hockey season.

Ontario and Alberta Consider Shared Online Poker Liquidity

Ontario’s peer-to-peer poker segment recorded C$130 million in wagers during September. Operators generated C$6.4 million in revenue from the activity.

However, the market remains limited because players can currently compete only against other participants within Ontario.

The situation could change as discussions around shared liquidity continue.

Ontario and Alberta are expected to announce an agreement allowing players from both provinces to participate in shared online poker games.

The Supreme Court of Canada is also considering a separate legal matter involving Ontario’s ability to pool peer-to-peer gaming players with participants in other jurisdictions.

Dan Keene, CEO of Alberta iGaming Corporation, previously indicated that discussions with Ontario were progressing. He also expressed optimism about a possible announcement on shared liquidity.

More Gambling Operators Prepare to Enter Ontario

Ontario’s regulated iGaming market continues to attract additional operators.

At the time of the report, the province had 50 authorised operators, including the government-owned Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG).

The 49 operators managed by iGaming Ontario were running a total of 84 online gambling sites.

Several additional brands also received approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) in October.

These included Betsafe, the Malta-based BetMaster and Loonie Casino, operated by Sunflower Gaming Ltd.

The new approvals could further increase competition among licensed operators.

Alberta’s Regulated iGaming Market Also Records Growth

Ontario’s latest results come as Alberta continues developing its regulated online gambling sector.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation released its first market report covering the period from the province’s launch on July 13 through September 30, 2026.

The report showed that Alberta had 24 licensed operators running more than 30 gambling websites in September.

The market recorded over 388,000 active player accounts, with total wagers reaching C$1.22 billion.

Operators generated C$56.6 million in gross gaming revenue during the month.

Online casino games accounted for 88% of total wagers and 80.5% of revenue. Sports betting contributed the remaining 12% of wagering activity and 19.5% of GGR.

Alberta’s market has since expanded. By October 30, it had more than 30 operators running 51 licensed commercial gambling sites.

Keene also indicated that the province expects between 10 and 15 additional licensed sites by the end of 2026.

Among the operators preparing to enter the market are PointsBet Canada and River Cree, a First Nations-owned land-based casino operator.

The continued expansion of both Ontario and Alberta highlights the growing importance of Canada’s regulated online gambling market.
