North Carolina Sets New Monthly Sports Betting Record with $811.4 Million Handle in October

In the month of October, North Carolina’s sports betting operators recorded a total handle of $811.4 million, establishing a new monthly benchmark for the state’s industry. This figure represents an 18.5% increase over the previous record of $685 million set in March of this year. When compared to October 2024, the handle demonstrates a growth of 32.6%, and it exceeds the September total by 18.3%.

According to data released by the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, the total amount wagered that month reached over $784.3 million in paid wagers. Additionally, operators allocated approximately $27.1 million towards promotional betting activities. The volume of cancelled and voided bets was reported at $4.3 million, while players’ winnings amounted to $729 million. These figures culminated in a gross gaming revenue of $78.1 million for October.

This revenue figure marks a 60.4% rise compared to the same period last year and is 16.9% higher than in September. Nonetheless, it falls short of the record $105.3 million achieved in April 2024, representing a shortfall of 25.8%. The monthly hold percentage stood at 11.4%. Furthermore, the state collected approximately $14.1 million in taxes derived from sports betting activities during the month.

Year-to-date, North Carolina’s sports betting handle has surpassed the $2 billion mark. While the regulatory body does not disclose data per operator, it provided an overview of the market’s cumulative performance from July through October. During this period, the total wagering volume reached $2.35 billion, composed of $2.26 billion in actual bets and $82.8 million in promotional wagers.

The combined total of voided and cancelled wagers was reported at $15.5 million, with player winnings exceeding $2.11 billion. These figures contributed to an operator revenue of approximately $221.7 million, yielding a hold rate of 9.45%. The total tax income generated over this period was approximately $39.9 million.
